Dear SURJ ROC friends and members,
With some sadness but also extreme gratitude for the work we have done together, the Steering Committee has decided to close the Rochester chapter of SURJ. SURJ ROC has historically been a stepping stone for individual white people to grow into their activism and move onto further work for racial justice through other organizations. Now our active membership is too small to maintain this work. The remaining leadership as we shut down are all committed to remain active in local racial justice organizations, and we encourage our members and readers to do the same. If you missed our newsletter with suggestions for ways to continue the fight for racial justice, please contact communications@surjroc.org. We will keep this page up for a few months, so please continue to use it to keep in touch with each other and share events, but we will not be posting.
The remaining funds in our bank account have been donated to community activist and former advisor Melanie Funchess for her ongoing education.
Again, we are so grateful for the time and energy that you all have put into making our community more inclusive and just, and we look forward to continuing our racial justice work in other capacities outside of SURJ ROC.
